How to eXceed with SSH
-
Get an account on Nature.
-
Install Hummingbird eXceed software on your networked PC (see Workstation
Support Services to download eXceed).
-
Install an SSH-compatible terminal client such as TeraTerm+SSH or F-Secure on
your networked PC (see get_ssh.html). Or
decide to use the web-based SSH program Mindterm
-
Log on to your Nature account using the SSH client.
-
Make sure that eXceed is running on your PC (start it from the Programs/Exceed
menu, or put it in your Programs/StartUp folder so that it always runs when you
start Windows)
.
- When you log onto Nature, your DISPLAY variable should automatically
be set to something like Nature.Berkeley.Edu:10:0. Verify this by typing
'echo $DISPLAY'. Display numbers starting with 10:0 or higher indicate
that your X windows sessions will be "piped" through your secure SSH
connection. (If the DISPLAY variable is not set, a workaround is to
type 'setenv DISPLAY $REMOTEHOST:0.0'. This will send your X windows back
to your computer monitor, but will not use the secure SSH connection.)
-
Now what? What you can do with an X windows session depends on the
software on your workstation. Programs like Arc/Info and SAS will
start their own X windows. You can also run X programs such as
xclock, xlogo, xpuzzle, or xpizza if they are installed on your
workstation.
